When it was first formed by John Buchanan in 1987, the Peoria Jazz Band's original inspiration was the San Francisco style, revived in the '40s by Lu Watters and Turk Murphy, and more recently in the '70s by Tom Baker. Much of that music came from King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Kid Ory in the '20s and '30s. Today the Peoria Jazz Band's repertoire has broadened somewhat, and includes many other numbers. The band has built up a regular following from many areas around Sydney. A regular gig for 19 years has been a dance (Jazz for Dancing) on the first Friday of each month at the Dural Memorial Hall, where our friends and supporters have enjoyed meeting and dancing in a friendly country-style atmosphere. The band has played at many private functions all over Sydney. It has performed at Government House, at the Museum of Modern Art, and on the Lady Hawkesbury cruise ship. It has been featured at jazz festivals in Manly, the Central Coast, The Entrance and the Southern Highlands, and has played at the Australian Jazz Conventions in Sydney and Launceston. It has also made appearances at a number of the major clubs featuring traditional jazz, such as the Central Coast, Eastern Suburbs, Sutherland-Cronulla, Ashfield and Kirribilli. |
