John Buchanan presents
The Southern Highlands Jazz Festival
a celebration of
CLASSIC JAZZ, RAGTIME and SWING
This year's Festival will again be held at Frensham School, Mittagong. The Saturday program opens with a revival of the spirit of the early Count Basie groups followed by a tribute to the early white jazz bands. In the early afternoon session we will highlight the music of the Ellingtonian small groups and in the late afternoon session we pay tribute to Kid Ory, pioneer of the “tailgate” trombone style.
On Saturday night the complete program of the historic Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert held on 16 January 1938 will be recreated by fifteen of our finest big band musicians under the direction of Trevor Rippingale.
The Sunday program opens with a tribute to Bix Beiderbecke followed by an all-star group organised by Paul Furniss to salute the music of great New Orleans clarinet players, Omer Simeon and Edmond Hall.
The afternoon session opens with a salute to the Boswell Sisters and other great female jazz singers of the 1930s, followed by a big band tribute to the late Dave Dallwitz, pioneer Australian jazzman and composer.
The Sunday program then concludes with our traditional tribute to Lu Watters and his Yerba Buena Jazz Band and the San Francisco Jazz Revival.
All food and refreshments will again be organised by the Bowral-Mittagong Rotary Club Chef. Lunch and dinner will be provided and a bar selling alcohol, soft drinks, tea and coffee will be open throughout the weekend.
Tickets may be purchased for the whole weekend or separately for each of the three sessions – Saturday Day, Saturday Evening and Sunday Day Session.
