In the early 1990s, John Buchanan started promoting a series of programmed events to reflect the spirit of the early classic jazz and ragtime era. His tightly structured programs featuring his music have been presented at jazz festivals, clubs and theatres throughout Eastern Australia.

To capture the results of these concerts and festivals for posterity, John joined with recording engineer
Peter Wolstenholme in 1996 to launch the B&W Music label.
